FAQ
How is your approach different from others?
My "back to basics" approach to healthy balanced circadian living does not involve any tricks, gimmicks or fancy products- just you learning how to tap into your inner wisdom and natural circadian rhythms. Through your body/mind/spirit system, you have your very own "built in guide" and "alert mechanism" to warn you when something is out of whack and provide you with clues on how to shift behaviors, patterns, thoughts and emotions to better balance the system. All you need to get started is a process for better connecting with this inner guide.

During our time together you will learn a process for how to better listen, interpret and identify patterns with messages being sent by your body (through physical symptoms), and mind (through thoughts and emotions). In addition, you will become familiar with system-balancing diet and lifestyle practices to address your specific health needs.

This approach offers a path for connecting with your own best natural healer- YOURSELF. Think of me and my Nursing, Ayurveda and Yoga expertise as temporary "training wheels" to support you while you gain the necessary skills and strength to ride and balance on your own.

Holistic Nursing Practice
Defined by the American Holistic Nursing Association as "a nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal", and recognized by the American Nurses Association as a distinct nursing specialty.
A "whole person" or holistic approach:
- focuses on healing (balancing) not treating
- works with a person not a patient,
- views a person as a whole system, made up of not just the physical body but also the mind and spirit subsystems
- views health as not absences of disease but as the measure of balance and harmony a person creates within their body/mind/spirit system and with their connecting environments.
- Strives to understand conditions and experiences from the person's perspective
Ayurveda
Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit words "ayur" meaning life and "veda" meaning knowledge, when combined can be understood as the "science of life". This holistic natural system of health originating in India over 5000 years ago is one of the oldest health systems still practiced today, and continues to provide valuable guidance for present day healthy balanced living.
With a primary focus on prevention, health is viewed as a measure of balance an individual creates with what is known as the "three-functional energies"; energy of movement (aka-Vata), energy of transformation (aka-Pitta), and the glue/structural energy (aka-Kapha). These three energies are responsible for controlling all functions of the mind and body. While all three energies are present and at play in each and every one of us, at birth we are born with our own unique combination of these energies, referred to as your Ayurvedic Constitution or "balanced state". Ayurveda says how closely we live our lives in sync with our own unique "blend of energy mix" is a strong determinate of our level of health. Not only are these three functional energies at play within us, but they are also at play outside of us in our environment (social, family, work, friends) and natures cyclic rhythms (ex: change of seasons, day/night cycle). How you honor and adapt to these ever changing energies and rhythms influences your overall health and balance.
How you manage your "inputs" (food, water, breath, and perception), and select lifestyle practices (sleep, activity, routines) are the two most powerful tools to influence your energy mix. Through the use of diet, natural remedies, lifestyle practices, herbs, rejuvenation/detoxification processes, hands on therapies, breathing, meditation, and yoga techniques, Ayurveda provides instructions for building your natural path to healthy balanced living.

Holistic Nursing Assessment
A holistic nursing assessment goes beyond focusing on the presence or absence of physical symptoms as a measure of health, but instead assesses the status of your "whole-being" (aka- body/mind/spirit system), within the context of your specific social and physical environments. A majority of the assessment is spent asking questions getting to know you, your health experiences, health beliefs, current habits, and routines. An Ayurvedic Constitutional Analysis, which includes additional questioning, visual assessment of your eyes, hair, nails, skin and tongue as well as Ayurvedic pulse assessment are performed. The assessment consists of a discussion of results of the Ayurvedic Constitutional Analysis, review of general patterns, tendencies and prominent qualities noted with current diet and lifestyle choices. The assessment ends with overview for how this information can be used to enhance your overall health.

Ayurvedic Constitution "energy type"
Simply stated your Ayurvedic constitution is your "unique energy mix".
According to Ayurveda everyone and everything including all aspects of the body and mind are governed by three principles energies. The energy of movement, energy of transformation and the glue energy. When reading about Ayurveda you will find references to the energy of movement as "Vata", energy of transformation as "Pitta" and glue energy as "Kapha". While each cell in your body contains all three energies, at birth you are born with your own "unique energy mix" and referenced by Ayurveda as your "balanced state".
You will not be able to directly see these energies, but they can be felt, expressed, and identified through your physical actions, verbal actions, as well as thoughts/emotions. An Ayurvedic Practitioner through direct observation, touch (pulse assessment) and questioning can determine your Ayurvedic constitution or "unique energy mix". According to Ayurveda if you live your life with awareness and in line with your unique energy mix, through selection of supportive diet and lifestyle practices you are more likely to experience good health. Consequently variations from your unique energy mix, if left unmanaged can lead to imbalances in your body/mind system.
Self-Care
Self-care is self-support, and nobody can do this better than you. Checking in with your "inner guide" and selecting "inputs" (food, water, breath, perception), and lifestyle practices that support and balance your entire being (body, mind, spirit), are your most powerful tools to promote, maintain or restore healthy balanced living.
