As a holistic health nurse, I am passionate about simplifying healthy living. Through this platform I plan to share practical tips, tools, techniques, and simple daily life "hacks" that align with using the body and mind the way they were naturally designed to be used.

Back in ancient times prior to the invention of the light bulb, daily lifestyle practices revolved around cues from nature. It was common to wake with the sun, and go to bed when it became dark; eat food in season and grown locally; warm-cooked, freshly prepared meals were a standard, and days where filled with an abundance of activity and

natural daylight exposure. While advances in technology have enhanced the quality of modern day living, they have also influenced a gradual shift away from some of these tried and true daily rituals that naturally supported good health.

I am not proposing we do away with the modern advances we have come to enjoy, but instead not forget how our daily habits are opportunities to give our body and mind what they need to function at their best.

Daily Challenge:

Give your body and mind what they crave. The following are a few daily habits you can experiment with. Pace yourself- no need to do them all- the point is to keep healthy living simple. Overtime you may notice that some of these practice may naturally become habits if you stick with them.

  • Move- this doesn't necessarily have to involve formal exercise sessions or work-out plans- just get out and move your body daily.

  • Eat freshly prepared, cook meals with ingredients you recognize and can pronounce!

  • Give yourself "down-time"- the body and mind need a break and time to recharge just like your cell phone.

  • Spend time and connect with others- while COVID may have created a number of challenges with connecting face-to face, it actually opened more opportunities to connect virtually.

  • Live in balance with your environment- as you and your environment change so do your health needs. Self-care is adjusting and adapting each to meet your unique health needs. Your social circles, family, work, physical living space and community can influence your health. Take time and notice the impact each of these environments has on you.

  • Connect with nature- exposure to natural light, fresh air and natural sounds can act as an instant "reset" for your day. Take time to pause and observe nature's daily rhythms (sunrise/sunset, phases of the moon, tide levels) as well as the different rhythms nature offers with each season (temperature, growth patterns, moisture level, wind). The food we eat, the air we breath and the water we drink all ultimately come from nature, take a few minutes each day to be grateful for the gifts nature provides.
